My last night in Venice was the darkest time so far on my trip. The only way out that I could see was to flee myhostel in Venice Mestre (the mainland) without paying and head to Rome. There I would find the Australian embassy and plead for help.
Luckily, it didn't entirely turn out that way, but I will tell you what happened. It was my last day in Venice and I was about to use the last of my money. I had about 10 Euro left, so I decided to get more money out from an ATM using the only card I had left (my duplicate cash passport, if I lose that I am proverbially up the creek without anything to steer with) as my wallet was stolen in Prague. The ATM said "We have been requested to return your card, please contact your bank", so I bussed back to the mainland to get on the internet and call the cash passport guys. There I cancelled my other card that was stolen because i hadn't done so yet (I didn't think I needed to but anyway). It was cancelled and was told that my other card should work fine. I went back to Venice and no, it still would not work (in fact this time the ATM I used said "You are out of credit"). I bussed back to the mainland and called the guys again. By this time it was 8PM which was when I wa planning to go to bed because I needed to catch a train by 7AM to Florence. They said it would work fine until I mention I was in Italy. They replied with "yes, not many ATMs in Italy work with our card" I said "Oh darn". I then bussed back into Venice and spent my time into the late hours of the night, in the rain, wandering Venice looking for an ATM that would work. Luckily on about the 18th ATM I found one. I danced. Thankfully I didn't do it completely alone as I helped an American girl find her hostel in Venice from the bus station. I then gave her a tour of Venice while looking for ATMs, so it all worked out OK. In other news, I hope to catch up with all my photos while in Rome!
